THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUICIDAL TENDENCIES AMONG YOUTH WITH
HOPELESSNESS AND DEPRESSION
Abstract. The perception of hopelessness and
depression as the causes of suicide among young people makes their spread
dangerous. In this context, we focused our research on the relationship between
hopelessness, depression, and suicidal tendencies. Our study found that the
risk of suicide, hopelessness, and depression, and, accordingly, the average
rates of young people with suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, are higher
than those of young people without suicidal thoughts. The identification of a
positive, weakly significant relationship between the risk of suicide and
hopelessness (rspearman = 0.401; p < 0.001) against the
background of the suicidal thoughts factor (n = 616), as well as a positive,
moderately significant relationship between the risk of suicide and depression
(rspearman = 0.507; p < 0.001) provides grounds for asserting
that as the level of hopelessness and depression in young people against the
background of the suicidal thoughts factor increases, their risk of committing
suicide also increases, and vice versa. The finding of a positive weak
significant association between suicide risk and hopelessness (rspearman
= 0.487; p < 0.001) and a positive moderate significant association between
suicide risk and depression (rspearman = 0.580; p < 0.001)
against the background of the suicide attempt factor (n=186) suggests that as
the level of hopelessness and depression in young people against the background
of the suicide attempt factor increases, their risk of committing suicide
increases, and vice versa.
