Summary. In the context of knowledge production and knowledge-based economy leading to current global competition among universities of the world, the research activity of universities is of particular importance in terms of creating, disseminating and using new knowledge for the benefits of society. From this point of view, it is considered appropriate to determine the factors having an influence on the research productivity of universities, and to study deeper the issues of proper organization, planning and management of the future research activity. In addition, as new educational policies prioritize the research activities of higher education institutions and encourage the establishment of research universities, it is of particular importance to investigate individual and institutional factors affecting research productivity.
