TYPOLOGY OF
SEMANTIC CHANGES IN ENGLISH
Summary. The article talks about the process of
changing the meanings of words in English and its types. The process of
changing the meanings of words is called semantic change. The modern meaning of
words differs from their original meaning. Language change is one of the main
areas of study by linguists, and semantic change is part of the process of
language change. Semantic change is characteristic for all languages, the
typology of semantic changes in all languages was developed by the American
linguist Leonard Blumfield. This article comprehensively examines the
classification of semantic changes developed by the great linguist and analyzes
the types, kinds of semantic changes . This classification of semantic changes
is suitable not only for English, but also for other languages. By examining
this classification in depth, we can carry out an analysis and comparison of
semantic changes in different languages.
