Abstract. There have been many research cases studying the application of the strategic planning approach, which is based on the private sector and integrated into other different fields, including higher education system. It is noted that the application of the strategic planning in higher education institutions can contribute to the solution of internal problems, and also has the potential to support the achievement of sustainable innovation and increase in quality indicators. In this article, the basic model of strategic planning for the effective management of scientific research activities of universities is studied.
