Abstract. This
article is devoted to the historical and pedagogical aspect of the problem of
developing reading comprehension skills in the Azerbaijani education system,
and to the scientific analysis of the role of the prominent educator and
pedagogue Safaraly bay Valibayov in this field. The main purpose of the study
is to determine the importance of national pedagogical traditions, especially
the pedagogical heritage of Safaraly bay Valibayov, in the formation of reading
comprehension skills. During the study, it was determined, based on both the
scientific sources used and the materials presented, that reading comprehension
skills are one of the main components of not only technical literacy, but also
the student's cognitive, thinking and personality development.
