MULTİKULTURALİZM VƏ MİLLİ KİMLİK: QARŞILIQLI TƏSİR MEXANİZMLƏRİ

Abstract. As a result of migration, globalization, and the information revolution, almost no society today remains purely monocultural. In this context, the relationship between multiculturalism and national identity has become a central academic and political issue. Some scholars view these two phenomena as inherently contradictory, while others argue that their synthesis is possible. This article analyzes both approaches and describes four main mechanisms of interaction: conflict, compromise, hybridization, and synthesis. Drawing on the experiences of Canada, France, and Azerbaijan, the study shows that shifting from a rigid, ethnic-based definition of national identity to a flexible, civic-based one can ensure both stability and integration in a multicultural environment. Ultimately, the most desirable model is the synthesis mechanism.
